Hello Robertson Parents,

WooHoo!! We are finished with the CogAT test! Results should be back sometime in March. It was great to see all of the students dressed up as the career they want to have when they grow up. Just a quick tip for reading homework: when your child gets stuck on a word have them look for chunks in the word they may know such as it, and, all or is instead of sounding it out. Another tip is to have them skip the word, read the rest of the sentence and then go back to the beginning of that sentence and reread it to listen to themselves as to what would make sense.

Hello Everyone!

The class had an exciting time greeting the Sam Houston State University football players on Thursday!! They especially loved giving them high fives!!

This week is CogAT testing, Cognitive Abilities Test. Your child will be taking 2 tests daily. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each test takes about an hour to complete. I will read what it says and your child will bubble in the correct picture. Please help your child prepare by getting a good nights sleep and a nourishing breakfast. A letter went home on Friday with more information. If you have any further questions feel free to email me or Mrs. Kidd, testing coordinator.

Welcome Back!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful and rested winter break. It was great to see my family in Kansas. Unfortunately, the one day it snowed, while my husband and I were there, it melted as soon as it hit the ground!

There has been a change to the temperature guidelines for recess. We may now go outside if the feel temperature is between 32 and 100. The low temperature used to be 40. Please send a coat with your child:)

Hello Parents,

I hope everyone stayed dry this weekend. We needed the rain.

Just a friendly reminder that your child only needs to read 10-15 minutes per night. They do not have to finish reading the entire book each night.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

I hope everyone enjoyed their week off. I'm looking forward to being back at school and seeing everyone's smiling faces!

Our first party of the school year is approaching fast. We are asking for $5 from each student to make this a wonderful celebration for all. The money is due by December 9th but if you could send it in earlier the room mom's would be most appreciative. Thanks so much!

First grade has been selected to sponsor 2 angles this year for the holidays, a 7 year old girl and a 6 year old boy. If you are able to help brighten their holiday here's their information.
Girl-clothing size 8; shoe size 13; needs boots coat & winter clothes. Her wish list is boots, Barbie, arts & crafts. She loves to draw and paint.
Boy-clothing size 7; shoe size 13; needs pants, underwear, shoes & coat. His wish list is a bike and Lego's. All gifts are due Tuesday. Thanks:)

It's hard to believe Thanksgiving break is 1 week away! On Monday, we had a great time at Celebration of Learning. It was exciting to be able to walk the bases. On Wednesday, we learned a new song called Kids Count at the assembly and how to be respectful of personal space. Don't forget to wear your western wear on Tuesday!

It was great seeing Omegaman on Thursday. He ripped a phone book and snapped a wooden baseball bat in half!! The author, Kate Klise, will be here on Wednesday. Friday is the Fall Festival. Last week was a busy week! On Monday, fifth grade put on a performance for us about the cool kid rules. Tuesday was lunch with a loved one. Thursday was our amazing field trip to Frisco Fire Safety Town. Thank you to all of the parents that came and helped out. Friday was Robertson Round-Up. This week was such a great week! Thank you to Mr. Lozano and Mr. Flegel for being Watch Dog Dad's. The students really enjoyed seeing you, especially on the playground!! Greetings,

Woohoo! We had our first Robertson Round-up. Dheeraj is the "Hippest in the House" this month for displaying responsibility. Great job!

Thursday is our official Library day. Please help your child remember to bring their library book to school on Thursday's. It's okay if they forget, they'll just have to wait until the following week to check out a new book. If your child wants to keep the book for 2 weeks that's okay too.
Curriculum Focus:
Reading-Making Connections. For example, if your child is reading about a friend swimming at the pool, it may remind them of a time they went swimming. I will use the term "Text to Self Connections."

Writing-Observational Writing. For example, your child may choose to write about a pet. They would use a circle map and brainstorm what they know about their pet. Then, they would use a tree map to come up with 3 sentences. Such as, My dog is big. She has brown fur. She feels soft.

Spelling-The class is learning word wall chants and games using their spelling words from kindergarten. Kindergarten words-a, be, can, for, go, am, have, I, like, me, and, in, my, on, said, are, is, see, the, up, at, it, they, to, you
Math-Place Value. The students will understand the 2 in the number 25 represents 20 objects. We will also have our first math test on Thursday and Friday. The results will be shared with you during Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Science-How Things Move. The students will learn objects can move in a straight, curved or zigzag line.

Housekeeping Items:
1. Reminder-$8 is due Friday, September 16 for first grade field trip t-shirts. Sorry, for the confusion. I noticed I put the 16th on the note and the 9th on the blog last week.
2. Classroom needs, if you're able to help: wipes, paper towels, hand sanitizer, sandwich baggies, gallon baggies. Thank you to everyone that has already brought in these items. :)

WATCH D.O.G.S. is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life. Our goal is to have you spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to help promote a safe and positive school environment.

Dads, granddads, uncles, step-dads and adult brothers. . . . this is your chance to have a night out alone with your Robertson student in a fun atmosphere at school!

Hello All,

I hope everyone enjoyed their three day weekend! I know I did! I feel rested and ready for a wonderful week. From this week on I'll structure the blog by listing our curriculum focus for the week, followed by housekeeping things and ending with upcoming events/activities.

Curriculum Focus:
Reading- 1. Establishing a Purpose for Reading. Some examples are: reading for fun, reading to learn new information.
2. Retelling-students will retell a story from beginning to end

Writing-Conventions. Students will learn to put capitals at the beginning of sentences and punctuation at the end of sentences.

Spelling-The class is learning word wall chants and games using their spelling words from kindergarten. Kindergarten words-a, be, can, for, go, am, have, I, like, me, and, in, my, on, said, are, is, see, the, up, at, it, they, to, you

Math-1. Learning and/or review skip counting by 2's and 5's.
2. Learning to identify and create patterns.

Science-Location. For example, today the class played pin the petal on the flower. Students noticed petals that were close to, farthest away from and near the center of the flower.

Check out all of the petals! So many friends were close to the center that you can't see it anymore!

1. Students are allowed to bring water bottles with a squirt top.
2. Our class will have snack time daily before or after specials.
3. Our class is split among the other first grade teachers. I will email you a copy of the schedule. Unfortunately, I'm unable to upload it to the blog.

Hello!

Thank you so much for all of the "sweet" gifts. I love them all! Thank you for sending in soil and 2 liter bottles. Everyone loved making their plant terrarium. They will be recording their observations in their science journal.

I just wanted to let you know that Robertson has started the Boosterthon and our class is having a blast! We are working together as The Fireballs to be a great team that helps our school. As we work together we hope to reach the following incentives that I have created for our class:

The Booster Team has been challenging our class to LAUNCH as Leaders with great character. Today they encouraged the students that Leaders are LEARNERS. They helped the students think through various ways they could continue learning in and out of school with a big focus on reading!

Boosterthon was here Wednesday to get the students excited about getting pledges for the upcoming fun run on Friday, April 15th. Your child received a source code on their necklace for you to go to www.funrun.com to enter your pledge amounts daily. A Boosterthon representative comes to our class daily to post how much has been pledged and sometimes a prize is given! Today (Thursday) our class will coming up with a team name!

Hello Everyone!

One more week until a week's vacation!! The students have enjoyed the various activities using the Marc Brown books. We will continue this next week and bring our author study to close on Friday, November 19. Your child may wear pajamas, bring a blanket, pillow and books. Your child will listen to Arthur's Chicken Pox and have their face painted with chicken pox:) If you don't want your child's face painted please email me as soon as possible at williamm@friscoisd.org. Our snack for the day will be chicken noodle soup. This will be an exciting ending to our author study!

Also if you're able to donate wipes to the classroom that would be wonderful! The students enjoy using the erasable markers to practice various things and we are running very low. Thanks in advance:)

Another great week! We went to the library on Tuesday and enjoying a video preview about the upcoming Book Fair. We will preview the books this Thursday at 10:00am in the library. I hope everyone had an opportunity to go to Chicko-fil-A on Wednesday. On Friday, we were entertained by the Little Elm Fire Clowns on Fire Safety.

Hello Parents & Students!

Literacy Assessments are finally complete! Guided reading books will start coming home Monday, September 27. Please listen to your child read nightly for at least 15 minutes.

This past week your child was able to participate in a bus evacuation drill on Monday. The best part was going out the back of the bus! On Wednesday, Nurse Dean held a health screening in the library. She checked height, weight, hearing, sight and teeth! A letter will be coming home in the next couple of weeks if any concerns were found. Thursday was the first math test! Your child's results will be shared at Parent-Teacher conferences on Monday, October 11th. Friday was Robertson Round-up, which is always a blast! Sarah Kidd was selected as Star of the Month for displaying responsibility. Next month on October 8th I will select a student who displays Integrity.

This week was our first practice spelling test! Everyone did an amazing job:) Every Monday a pre-test will come home. For homework they may begin practicing their spelling words. Hello Parents and Students:)

WOW, what an amazing first week! We started math and science journals, and began writing sentences with a character, setting and an event. I hope to see everyone on Thursday for Curriculum Night at 7:30. You will have an opportunity to sign up for parent-teacher conferences which will be held October 11.

Hello First Grade Parents and Students,

Welcome to Robertson Elementary if this is your first year here! Welcome back to those of you that are returning! I'm very excited about this year, this is my tenth year to teach first grade! There are a lot of curriculum changes this year in reading and science. Even though I've been teaching for quite some time I always feel as though it's my first year or so because there are always changes. Nothing stays the same! We will hit the ground running in first grade, it will be a growing year. I look forward to getting to know of each of you.
